How Long Is a Pennsylvania Marriage License Valid?

    Last updated August 2026

60 calendar days from issuance. Add the three-day waiting period at the start, and you have a window of roughly eight weeks in which the ceremony must happen. Miss it and you apply and pay again — $85 in Bucks County.

    The window

    Apply Day 0
    License valid from Day 3
    License expires Day 60
    Usable ceremony window Days 3–60

Apply two to four weeks before your wedding. That's the sweet spot — enough buffer for a document problem or a county closure, comfortably inside the expiration.

Why applying early is a mistake

Couples front-load wedding admin, and this is the one item where that backfires.

Apply three months out and your license expires before the wedding. You'd need to reapply and pay the $85 again, and you'd have wasted a trip.

The rule: don't apply more than about eight weeks before your date.

Why applying late is also a mistake

The three-day waiting period is not the only constraint.

County offices close weekends and holidays. A Thursday application means the license is valid Sunday — but if a document turns out to be wrong, you've lost the following week.

Documents can be a problem. A death certificate must be the original, not a photocopy. Finding that out three days before the wedding is a genuine crisis.

Two to four weeks out is the answer. Not one, not twelve.

    What if it expires?

You reapply. There's no extension, renewal, or grace period.

That means another $85, another application, and another three-day wait. It's entirely avoidable with a calendar reminder.

Where the license can be used

Anywhere in Pennsylvania, not just the county that issued it. A Bucks County license works for a ceremony in Pittsburgh, the Poconos, or Philadelphia.

Not outside the state. A Pennsylvania license is void for a ceremony in New Jersey, New York, or anywhere else.

    After the ceremony

The marriage return must be filed with the issuing office within 10 days of the ceremony. This is separate from the 60-day validity and it's the step people forget.

If it isn't filed, no marriage record exists — regardless of what happened at your wedding.

    Frequently asked questions

How long is a Pennsylvania marriage license good for? 60 calendar days from issuance. Combined with the three-day waiting period, that gives you a usable window from day 3 to day 60.

When should you apply for a marriage license? Two to four weeks before the wedding. Earlier risks expiration; later leaves no margin for a document problem or a county holiday closure.

Can you extend a Pennsylvania marriage license? No. There's no extension or renewal. If it expires you reapply and pay the fee again — $85 in Bucks County.

Does the waiting period count toward the 60 days? Yes. The license is issued and the clock starts, but it isn't valid to use until three days have passed.

Can you use a Bucks County license elsewhere in Pennsylvania? Yes, anywhere in the state. It is not valid for a ceremony outside Pennsylvania.

What happens if you don't file the license after the wedding? No marriage record will exist. The marriage return must be filed with the issuing office within 10 days of the ceremony.
